Release 12- Architecture

There are 3 main Tiers, all tiers can be in one machine or each can be installed on more than one machine.

The Desktop Tier
The Application Tier
• The Database Tier

Desktop Tier can be any standard browsers (e.g IE) which will communicate to application Tier via sun J2SEE plug in.

Application Tier receives HTTP request and routes to the other services as follows
Forms screen request will be routed to Forms service
HTML screen request will be routed to Web service
Reports request will be routed to concurrent manager

Database Tier receives request if any of the application tier services need to access data from database.

Sun J2SEE plug in
In the traditional, Forms-based Oracle Applications environment, the JVM (which in earlier releases was Oracle JInitiator) was run as part of the standard Applications sign-on process. Now, with the move to a mainly HTML-based environment, the JVM (now the J2SE Plug-in) is only invoked when a user chooses to access functions that require it, such as running a form. If the J2SE Plug-in has not been installed, the browser
prompts the user to download the required installation executable.

Forms Server
The Forms server hosts the Oracle Applications forms and associated runtime engine that
support the forms interface.

Concurrent Processing Server

Concurrent Processing is an Oracle Applications feature that allows non–interactive and potentially long-running functions to be executed efficiently alongside interactive operations.
